Understand your cover: loss of refrigerated vaccines
As you may be aware, Towergate MIA Surgery policies already
provide automatic cover for "Loss of Refrigerated Vaccines". This
means that should your fridge break down and the vaccines are
rendered unusable due to a rise in temperature, you can claim on
your insurance policy.
One issue we can't help with though is the inconvenience
caused by the sudden loss of your vaccine supply. This could lead
to you having to cancel and reschedule patient appointments for a
time when your supply has been replenished. However, most claims
for loss of vaccines are avoidable.
The most common reasons for loss of vaccines are...
- Power supply being accidentally turned off - often by
cleaners
- The fridge door being accidentally left open
- A power cut
- Lack of maintenance on the fridge
We suggest you consider taking the following preventative
action...
- Install a Socket Safe Cover - this is a plastic covering which
covers the plug socket and locks into place, preventing the plug
from being accidentally unplugged
- Hard wire the fridge directly into the power supply - this must
be done by a properly qualified electrician
- Maintain regular temperature checks, ideally first thing in the
morning and last thing at night
- If you are prone to power cuts, consider installing a back up
generator
- Obtain an annual maintenance agreement for your fridges - this
will often highlight when a fridge is wearing out and certain parts
needs replacing before it ceases to function
