Prevent thefts from your surgery
Thefts of wallets, credit cards, even laptops
from GP surgeries during working hours are more common than
you think. According to Carl Ramsdale, a security management
specialist with NHS Lincolnshire, certain gangs specialise is
criminal activity at GP premises.
Criminals, it seems, are increasingly looking to GPs "not for
health, but wealth".
Easy access
Many practices have invested in CCTV cameras to protect the
building when it is closed, but they remain at risk to thieves
during the working day. Surgeries are particularly vulnerable, as
they are open for long periods and accessible to the public. Few
other office-based businesses allow people to walk in so
freely.
Be aware
Tell your staff to be aware and empower them to challenge
strangers whose actions appear suspicious. Sometimes a simple offer
of help to an intruder is enough to deter them. To combat the
chance of being fooled by a forged ID card, ask them who they came
to see.
Secure valuables
It's an obvious point but still very important. Ensure valuables
are locked away and put strong locks on consulting room doors and
windows.
There are various locks you can choose, from simple key locks to
smartcard-activated locks and keypad entry systems. Even
fingerprint-coded locks are available to practices, combining
convenience with security as there is no key to lose or code to be
cracked.
Staff vigilance
Whatever physical measures you put in place, staff vigilance
remains imperative. Limiting access for all visitors to certain
parts of the building may be difficult to enforce, so ensure staff
remain aware of who is entering/exiting the building and whether
they are accompanying a patient or not.
It may help to organise training to give staff the confidence to
question strangers and head off any potential problems.
Help and advice
The NHS Security Management
Service was set up in 2003 to protect NHS premises and staff
from theft and violence. It can advise practices about security
risks and their local security management specialists work closely
with the police and Crown Prosecution Service.
